Spanning approximately 70 miles, Cape Hatteras National Seashore is a series of barrier islands amongst the Outer Banks. This protected coastal reserve encompasses a variety of ecosystems including: pristine sandy beaches, dunes, marshes and maritime forests. Due to the diverse range of landscapes, Cape Hatteras National Seashore is a haven for many different coastal wildlife species.

Perhaps best known for its iconic Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, this National Seashore was first established long after its construction. It wasn’t until 1953 that this stretch of land was established as the very first national seashore in the United States. Today, Cape Hatteras National Seashore is managed and preserved by the National Park Service (NPS), which offers visitors an opportunity to experience the unspoiled natural beauty of this unique coastal oasis.

Best Time of Year to Visit Cape Hatteras

While there are many good reasons to visit Cape Hatteras National Seashore year-round, summer is perhaps the most popular and has the most hospitable weather for the water activities. RELAX AT THE BEACH

Cape Hatteras National Seashore boasts some of the most pristine beaches on the Outer Banks. Coquina Beach on Bodie Island is a popular beach for swimming and sunbathing. CLIMB THE CAPE HATTERAS LIGHTHOUSE

Perhaps the most iconic landmark of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore is the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. Standing at 210 feet, it is the tallest brick lighthouse in North America.

This black and white beacon was constructed in 1870 to guide ships away from the treacherous shoals and shifting sandbars along the OBX. Visitors can climb to the top and take in panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and surrounding shores. Be sure to stop by the Hatteras Island Visitor Center to view exhibits about the lighthouse's history.

As much of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore is undeveloped, the majority of activities in this area are outdoors. However, the options for recreational adventure in the area are practically endless.

The Outer Banks is well known for its saltwater fishing scene, and Hatteras is no exception. From surf fishing to fishing off the pier to chartering a deep sea fishing boat, there are plenty of options for reeling in a big one here.

To fish on Cape Hatteras National Seashore, you will need to obtain a North Carolina Coastal Recreational Fishing License. Once you’ve gotten this, you’re free to cast a line and reel in one of the diverse array of fish species that inhabit these waters.

Hatteras is also an area known for water sports. From kitesurfing to parasailing to windsurfing, there are tons of opportunities for adventures on the water. What to Know Before You Go

RESPECT THE ENVIRONMENT

Be sure to try and minimize your impact on the natural habitats surrounding you. Always stay on marked trails. Keep off the dunes as they are natural barriers protecting the land.

LEAVE NO TRACE

When you visit any natural environment you should always strive to leave no trace. This includes being sure to dispose of your trash and recyclables. If you bring along a pet, be sure to clean up after it also. Keep in mind, if you bring your pets they must be tethered to a 6 ft leash.

WILDLIFE PROTECTION

This national seashore is home to several threatened and endangered species, like sea turtles. The protection of these unique creatures should always be a priority when visiting. Always maintain a safe distance from any wildlife you encounter. Should you encounter any injured wildlife, contact a National Park Service staff member for help.

VEHICLE ACCESS

Off-road beach driving is permitted in certain areas along the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. You must obtain and display an off-road vehicle (ORV) permit while driving on the beach. Be sure to keep an eye out for closures as sometimes beach access ramps and routes may close due to adverse weather effects or wildlife issues.

SAFETY TIPS

Most importantly, remember to stay safe when visiting the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. When swimming or participating in water sports, always be familiar with water conditions. Try to swim only where lifeguards are present.

You should also stay updated on weather forecasts for the day. Be sure to hydrate your body frequently and use sunscreen regularly.
